CAFÉ CUBANO

Acrylic paint on canvas.  20″ X 16″.  Acrylic. Inspired by Cuban culture.

The expression Aquí se toma café Cubano means “Here, you’ll find Cuban coffee”. After relocating to South Florida in 1989, the artist became fascinated with Miami’s Cuban culture. Where she encountered this popular expression at cafeterias and Cuban restaurants.

The preparation of Cuban coffee and the manner in which it is served dates back to the mid 18th century. During the 1950s, Cuba became a leading coffee producer in the world. Today, Cuba’s first coffee plantation has a place in the UNESCO world heritage list.

In Miami, Cuban colada became so popular that around 3 PM it’s very common to take a brake at work and drink a Cuban Colada; another expression to describe Cuban Coffee when the “espresso machine” didn’t exist as yet.  The colada was prepared by filtering Cuban coffee through a cone-shaped cloth into a large coffee pot.
